Come November 20th, 2019, Marvel comics wraps up the final story line of the official Star Wars comic. Issue #75 will be the final issue released in what is referred to as “Volume 3” of the Star Wars comics. This volume started back in 2015 just prior to the release of The Force Awakens and has spanned over the past four years. During this time we have seen just over 373 different issue variants spanning the 75 official issues released.
Since Marvel took back over the franchise for Star Wars comics, they have had an impressive run within the Star Wars universe. Within the span of 4 years we have seen over 50 different Marvel Star Wars titles. When Star Wars was released in 2015 the new comic sold over 1 million copies. The #1 issue is on its 7th reprint and currently has approximately 81 different variant issues.
It has been said time and time again that The Rise of Skywalker would be the final chapter in the Skywalker saga and that this film would wrap up the story line of the 3 trilogies released over the past 40 years. Honestly if that is the case then it makes sense to wrap up the Star Wars comic with issue #75 just prior to the release of the new movie.
Now with the above being said it was announced at the New York Comic Con that there would be a relaunch of the Star Wars comic and it would explore the time frame between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You can follow the link here for more information in regards to that.
Relaunching a comic isn’t something new and Marvel has been known to do it from time to time over the years. In fact we saw a relaunch of the Darth Vader comics and a handful of spinoffs focused on Darth Vader within the past few years.
As of right now there isn’t word on when the relaunch will take place. I imagine we will get that information once the final issue has been released. But during the downtime of the flagship comic I am sure between Marvel and IDW, we will have enough side stories and spin offs to keep us entertained.
